Butter Board

by Yejiskitchenstories

Butter boards are the latest viral TikTok trend. It’s made with softened butter, spread on a board and topped with various ingredients such as fresh herbs, flakey salt, hot honey (like my gochujang hot honey), or even fresh fruit. It’s a fun way to serve as an appetizer with crunchy bread!

I was inspired by Justine Snacks after she posted her butter board on TikTok!

Check out two delicious variations of the TikTok trend including a miso butter board topped with fresh herbs, flakey salt, and honey or a sweet and salty butter board with gochujang hot honey, flakey salt, and edible dried flowers.

Butter boards are a fun way to entertain because the combinations are endless, you can be as creative as you want! Serve the boards with some good crunchy bread and a butter knife. No double dipping is allowed so you can save the leftover butter for other recipes when cooking!

Make them ahead and keep them in the fridge until you’re ready to serve 😉

What you’ll need to make butter boards:

  • Butter: you can use unsalted or salted butter. Kerrygold is one of my favorites!
  • Flakey salt: I recommend flakey salt for this recipe— it has a unique texture and better mouthfeel as a finishing salt! Be sure to adjust your salt depending on the type of butter you use. Maldon salt is my favorite finishing salt.
  • Toppings and Mix-ins: fresh herbs, honey, fresh fruit, nuts, spices, jams, or preserves.
  • Bread of choice: I recommend french or sourdough bread.

What you’ll need for Miso Herb Butter Board:

  • White miso
  • Unsalted butter
  • Honey
  • Fresh herbs (parsley, green onion, and basil work great for this)
  • Flakey salt
  • Toasted bread of choice

What you’ll need for Gochujang Hot Honey and Butter Board:

  • Kerrygold unsalted butter
  • Gochujang hot honey
  • Flakey salt
  • Edible dried flowers
  • Toasted bread of choice

How to assemble a butter board:

Spread softened butter on a wooden/marble charcuterie board. The butter should be soft but not melted. You can even use a sheet of parchment paper for easier cleanup.

Sprinkle flakey salt and layer your toppings on top of the butter.

Serve with toasted bread, crackers, or fresh veggies.

FAQ and tips:

You can save the butter and use it for:

  • grilled cheeses
  • sandwiches
  • as a spread for toast
  • melt the butter down and use to baste steaks or other meats

Store the butter in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

  • Fruits (mixed berries, citrus slices, apples)
  • Spreads or Honey (fig jam, berry preserves, hot honey, wildflower honey)
  • Nuts (walnuts, pecans, pistachios)
  • Fresh herbs (chopped parsley, basil, mint, cilantro, dill)
  • Roasted Garlic
  • Spices (cinnamon if you’re going for something sweet, or chili flakes for some heat)
